I must confess.
That day, I really lost my cool – and yawned.
There was this dude who was going on and on and on to me about what a great creator man is.
“Man is the greatest species ever to be born on earth
Man is capable of creating anything
Man is so sophisticated he created wealth, prosperity and happiness
Man can create vehicles to travel to other planets and soon he will conquer the frontiers of the universe
Man can create complex instruments that can split atoms and harness their energy
Man can create gigantic skyscrapers that reach up to the sky
Man can make great products that increase the standard of living and quality of our life
Just look at the number of patents we are filing every year for new inventions”
….rah ! rah ! rah! rah! (with a lot of chest thumping!!!)
You get the picture.
He finally stopped, when he saw me yawning.
After he got over the shock, I told him:
All we have done is discovered what is already around us! We haven’t created anything apart from what is already there. Not even a bag of nuts!
Can you create even a single object that is not made of earth, water, fire, air and space?
The object should have a property other than solidity, cohesion, heat, motion and spaciousness.
Once you think of such an object, you should be able to build it in this universe, without using any of the material around you.
Now, that is real creation!
Maybe I was a bit harsh on him. I felt sorry later
I shouldn’t have yawned!
But I was compassionate.
I didn’t point out that he himself was made of the same material that is around him – earth, water, fire, air and space. Nothing about him was original or unique.
To his credit, he was courageous.
He showed up. 5 years later.
“Hey. Wait a minute. What about our mind? Our mind can imagine anything. Didn’t man create language, science, maths, religion, sports, philosophy, economics, culture, arts, society….rah rah rah??”
Actually, you answered the question yourself.
Man can’t create any of these. None of them are creatable things! We can only imagine them
They are ideas.
Many of them are useful and purposeful ideas
But then we did something stupid with them
We imagined the ideas to be real and permanent things!
And then we became even more stupid!
We started to treat the real world, as if it really is based on our ideas.
Hi there some really useful info here… Subscribed to your blog feed ;) Keep up the good work!
Great infomation. Lucky me I found your site by accident, and I’m shocked why i didn’t find this post earlier! I bookmarked it.
“the end” “treasure”. but u have been there is the end n treasure for u allways the same as u reached to it or it keeps on changing with each day. who is to decide for the persone that he has mastered the chambers and is he going to be A master forever.
@Sudha: The best way to describe the feeling of finding the treasure is one of immense Relief. Its like kind of dropping ALL the layers of stress, confusion, ignorance, delusion in an instant. I wish you get that experience for yourself. What happens next? Here, unfortunately, we face a challenge in selecting the right words to describe it. See the posts on “The April fool’s day joke” and “The Treasure map” you’ll get a feel for why it is so. Feel free to drop a mail if you need to discuss this further.
Awesome Urban Monk!!!
Made me think that why the world and people are getting so complicated day by day and dont know to where all these complications are leading to and for what joy… we need to just stick on to the basics…
@Poonam: thanks:-) I agree. Things are simple and uncomplicated. We create all the complications ourselves.
As we master the 8 chambers of Urban Shaolin, we come closer and closer to the treasure. The search for the treasure is more engrossing than the best mystery novel you might have read….and trust me, it comes with a surprising twist in the end!
